The life sciences are arguably the most rapidly developing field of modern scientific endeavour. In the last 20 years alone, major developments in microscopy, bioinformatics and molecular methodology have led to significant biological and medical breakthroughs. The life sciences have also created entirely new and exciting fields of research that cross the traditional borders between biology and the physical sciences, particularly engineering and physics.
In order to bring doctoral students up to speed on these exciting developments in the life sciences, a cross-disciplinary initiative at Lund University coordinates a package of postgraduate courses aimed at doctoral students from the Science, Medicine and Technical Faculties. The courses are both practical and theoretical and are designed to equip students with knowledge and skills that are relevant to their own research. Applications are invited from registered PhD students in all scientific disciplines at Lund University, and if places are available also from other universities. Please note that these courses are not open to master students! You have to certify that you are a registered PhD student when you apply.
The courses within the package are typically intensive one-week full-time courses that are offered in the autumn every year. The courses have a limited number of participants (varying from six to eight), ensuring that students receive excellent individual tuition. Most courses are hands-on courses where students are taught specific techniques. Lectures may also form part of these courses. Each course is recommended to give 3 ECTS credits ("högskolepoäng") in the LADOK register of the postgraduate student. Information for this year's applicants can be found on the application page.
Please put this programme announcement on the notice board of your department (pdf).
The course package is generously funded by the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University, and by a number of research schools within the life sciences: the Research Schools in Genomic Ecology (GENECO), Molecular Protein Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences (FLÄK) and Metal sites in biomolecules at Lund University, as well as the research network PlantLink at Lund University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp.
