Mikroberna är jordens osynliga majoritet. De finns i stort sett överallt där vi hittar flytande vatten och deras aktiviteter påverkar starkt alla andra livsformer. Vilken del av biologin du än specialiserar dig mot är kunskaper om mikroorganismerna viktiga. Deras betydelse inom t.ex. medicin, livsmedelsindustri, bioteknik och som molekylärbiologiska modellorganismer är välkänd, men mikrobiologin har också starkt förändrats och förnyats. Nya metoder och kunskaper gör det nu möjligt att utforska den enorma och till stor del outnyttjade resurs som mikroorganismerna utgör, och den stora effekt de har på all biologi. Denna kurs ger en bred orientering i modern mikrobiologi, avsedd både för dig som vill specialisera dig vidare inom ämnet och för dig som vill gå vidare mot någon annan inriktning. Vi går igenom mikroorganismernas diversitet, funktion och fysiologi, diskuterar vikten av molekylärbiologisk metodik for att studera dem, och ger en introduktion till ekologisk, medicinsk och industriell mikrobiologi. Kursen ger också grundlig träning i mikrobiologiskt laboratoriearbete.
Microbes are the unseen majority on earth. They are found essentially everywhere where there is liquid water and their activities strongly affect all other forms of life. Whatever part of biology you are specialising in, knowledge about microorganisms is valuable. Their importance in e.g. medicine, food industry, biotechnology, and as model organisms in molecular biology is well known, but microbiology has also been strongly developed and renewed. New methods and knowledge make it possible to explore the enormous and to a large extent unexplored resource that the microorganisms constitute and the large impact they have on all biology. This course gives a broad orientation in modern microbiology, designed both for those who will specialise in this subject and for those who will choose other directions of study. In the course we deal with microbial diversity, function, and physiology, discuss the significance of molecular biology methods in the study of the microbes, and give an introduction to ecological, medical, and industrial microbiology. The course also gives thorough training in practical microbiological work. | |
