Darwin and beyond

Evolution from the origin of life
to the human mind

A one-day Symposium at Lund University
30 October 2009 in Palaestra et Odeum
at 8.30-16.30

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, arguably the most important conceptual advance in the history of biology.

To celebrate this important event, a one-day symposium will take place at the Lund University. The symposium - which is popular scientific in nature - is being organised in collaboration with the Royal Physiographic Society of Lund, the National Committee for Biology of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and the Swedish Research Council. The speakers - renowned figures in evolutionary biology from Sweden and abroad - will cover a wide range of topics and perspectives, ranging from the evolution of cellular life to the evolution of man. The venue will be the historic Palaestra et Odeum, a centrally located lecture hall of the University.

The symposium is open to anyone interested in evolution and is free of charge. However, to plan for complimentary refreshments provided during the day, interested participants are requested to register in advance not later than Wednesday 21 October. For all enquiries please contact Professor Eric Warrant (phone + 46 704 96 49 27 or e-mail ).

The birds above are a kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and a redwing (Turdus iliacus) from "Illuminerade Figurer till Skandinaviens Fauna" (1832-1840) by Sven Nilsson (1787-1883). Nilsson was Professor in Natural History at Lund University 1832-1856. Sven Nilsson corresponded with Charles Darwin. They were discussing the peculiar fact that both males and females of reindeers are equipped with antlers, in contrast to other cervids.
